Why is it under construction?
As many of you know, John was a very private person. He chose to keep the details of Splattski.com—including its management, upkeep, and billing—completely to himself. Upon his passing without a will, it was very difficult for his family to legally transfer ownership of his website and prevent it from disappearing. After a year or so, his family was able to regain control.
However, during that time, the website’s domain and content were lost. Without access to
John’s software, without knowledge of the site’s billing, and with his payment methods terminated, the multiple services used to keep the website running unexpectedly shut off. This was very alarming and distressing to his family.
The domain was recovered (which is how you are seeing this page), but the hosted content in
its original format has insofar been unrecoverable. His family is now using this circumstance as an opportunity to reconstruct Splattski.com using different software which will be easier for them to access, edit, and pay for, as well as transfer between legal owners (should the new owner become...incapacitated). This will prevent the website from ever being in jeopardy again.
In the meantime, his family is grateful that there is an old version of John’s website available via
the Wayback Machine HERE (or use the link the top of this page). While the content of John’s website is being rebuilt (along with new, helpful features for his visitors, such as a page just for John’s topographic maps), please use the link to visit his original site. Some content is not functioning on the Wayback version, but rest assured that his family has all the data that appears missing or broken.
Please know that the relaunch and maintenance of John’s website is a priority for his family, but it takes an awful long time (and several major purchases) for one person with an existing full-time career to rebuild twenty years’ worth of content. This is also an emotionally-laborious process for a family still processing their grief.
We appreciate your patience, and look forward providing Splattski.com in perpetuity.
